I was born in 1980, before the internet was publicly available in the form we recognize today.
Personal computers were not yet ordinary household objects. It would be years before students could expect to encounter one at school, and longer before an internet connection became a normal part of daily life.
I remember the world before everyone carried a connected computer in their pocket.
Then I touched a computer.
Something changed.
The moment possibility became interactive
A computer did not feel like an appliance that performed one predetermined task. It felt like a machine made of possibilities.
You could learn its rules, give it instructions, build something, take it apart, change it, make a mistake, and try again. The same machine could support writing, design, music, communication, organization, experimentation, and play.
The more I learned, the more I wanted to understand.
I did not only want to use programs. I wanted to know what was happening underneath them.
Why did one computer perform better than another? How did its components work together? What made software compatible with one system and not another? Why did something fail, and what would make it work again?
That curiosity led me to build my own computers, troubleshoot hardware, explore operating systems, learn software, and treat every technical problem as an invitation to look deeper.
It never really stopped.
Then the internet connected everything
Experiencing the internet expanded that fascination into something much larger.
A computer was no longer only a machine in one room. It was an entrance into an international system of information, people, creativity, commerce, communities, and tools.
A person could publish something and make it available across the world. Artists could share work without waiting for traditional gatekeepers. People with unusual interests could find one another. A small organization could create a presence beyond its physical location.
The internet turned computers into places.
Websites could become businesses, publications, archives, galleries, communities, stores, radio stations, and identities. A domain could create a permanent home for an idea. A server could make a tool available to people who might never meet the person who created it.
I wanted to understand all of it.
Not only the visible pages, but what made those pages possible.
Learning what happens behind the screen
My interest developed into formal education and professional work. I earned degrees in Web Design and Development and spent decades working throughout the technology world.
I designed and built websites. I worked extensively with WordPress. I learned hosting, servers, domains, DNS, certificates, authentication, databases, content systems, migrations, technical support, and digital operations.
Each new layer revealed another.
A domain led to DNS. DNS led to hosting and email authentication. Websites led to databases and content architecture. User accounts led to sessions, permissions, identity providers, and single sign-on. Reliability led to monitoring, backups, deployment environments, and recovery.
These concepts can sound abstract when listed together. In practice, they determine whether people can find a service, trust it, sign in, complete their work, and return later to find their information intact.
Understanding them became both a career and a hobby.
I could finish a day of technical work and still want to experiment with a site, configure a service, research a domain, build a server, or investigate a better way to connect two systems.
I am not obsessed with internet culture
When people hear that someone is obsessed with the internet, they may imagine constant attention to social media, trending topics, online arguments, influencers, or whatever platform is absorbing the most attention that week.
That has never been the center of the fascination for me.
I am interested in capability.
How does information travel? How do systems identify and trust one another? How can a person publish without surrendering ownership? How can an independent artist reach people around the world? How can several tools work together as one coherent experience?
I care about what the internet makes possible behind the scenes.
Search engines and social platforms can be useful parts of that environment, but they are not the environment itself. The internet is larger than any company’s feed.
It is infrastructure for human communication, knowledge, art, organization, experimentation, and connection.
The most interesting question is not simply how to attract attention within the current platforms.
It is what we can build.
Music made the internet personal
My relationship with technology has always intersected with music.
The internet created ways to share original productions, DJ mixes, radio programs, videos, writing, artwork, and the stories surrounding creative work. It allowed independent artists to build direct relationships with audiences and preserve a catalog beyond the moment of release.
That opportunity also introduced difficult operational problems.
A single release could involve audio files, artwork, credits, descriptions, lyrics, identifiers, distribution records, press materials, social content, videos, merchandise, and several websites. Each platform wanted different information in a different format.
The creative work might be finished, yet the work of organizing, publishing, correcting, and connecting it had only begun.
I kept encountering tools that handled one part of the process but did not understand the whole.
I could see what the system needed because I had lived the problem from several sides: artist, producer, DJ, publisher, website builder, technical operator, and business owner.
Some tools lived in my head for years
Before generative AI, there were systems I wanted to create but could not realistically build alone within the available time.
I could design the architecture in my head. I could create websites, connect services, customize content systems, and build partial solutions. But turning every idea into a complete application required more development capacity than one person could continuously provide while also making music, operating a business, and living a life.
Some of those tools remained mental blueprints.
I would use an application and understand why it had been designed a certain way, while also knowing how I would make it better. I would enter the same information into another disconnected system and imagine a canonical source that could serve both. I would watch creative work disappear into disorganized folders and imagine relationships that could keep everything connected.
The ideas accumulated for decades.
AI gave me leverage, not an instant answer
When modern AI tools arrived, they did not suddenly provide me with ideas.
They gave me more time and leverage to pursue ideas I had already been developing.
That distinction matters.
Mission HQ and the larger 1st Drop Music and Free the Line ecosystem did not emerge from typing one prompt and accepting a finished result. The work represents hundreds and likely approaching thousands of hours of research, architecture, database design, content modeling, migration, authentication, infrastructure, interface work, testing, correction, and refinement.
We compared existing systems. We built from useful ideas. We discovered where familiar models were insufficient. We changed the architecture as practical requirements became clearer. We repaired mistakes, improved workflows, and created governance around actions that should never be automatic.
AI accelerated implementation and exploration.
It did not remove the need for technical knowledge, judgment, persistence, or the willingness to spend long hours solving unglamorous problems.
Vibe coding rests on a lifetime of context
The phrase “vibe coding” can make software creation sound almost effortless.
There is real value in being able to describe an idea conversationally and collaborate with AI to produce working code. It allows people to explore concepts that once required a much larger development team.
But the quality of the outcome still depends on the quality of the thinking around it.
Someone must understand the problem well enough to recognize whether the implementation actually solves it. Someone must test what happens outside the ideal scenario. Someone must identify security risks, preserve important data, understand dependencies, and decide which shortcuts are acceptable.
My work with AI is informed by decades of designing websites, operating systems, supporting users, managing hosting, troubleshooting failures, and building connected digital environments.
The prompts are not the foundation.
The foundation is a lifetime of accumulated context.
Technology should create a better human life
I do not want to build technology merely because more technology can be built.
The purpose is to give people better ways to work, create, share, organize, learn, and experience life.
That might mean giving an independent artist more control over a catalog. It might mean helping a small business replace repetitive administration with a coherent workflow. It might mean building a regional platform that helps people discover music, culture, places, and experiences beyond an algorithmic feed.
The most worthwhile tools create room for human activity.
They return time. They preserve knowledge. They help communities find one another. They reduce unnecessary friction. They make creative work easier to discover without asking the creator to surrender ownership of everything surrounding it.
Technology is most exciting to me when it improves what happens away from the screen.
The obsession continues
The internet has transformed many times since I first experienced it.
Websites became platforms. Servers became cloud infrastructure. Static pages became applications. Separate accounts became federated identities. Search became recommendation. Software became conversational.
Now AI is changing who can build, how quickly ideas can be tested, and what computers can help people accomplish.
I still approach these changes with the same curiosity I felt when I first touched a computer.
How does it work? What becomes possible? Where can it fail? How can it be improved? How can it give people more agency instead of less? How can it support art, business, community, and a more experiential life?
My obsession has never been only with the machines.
It is with the possibilities they create—and the lifelong work of turning those possibilities into something real.
